How to listen to YouTube with friends
- Start a lobby. You get a five-character code (like
7X4K9) and a link. There's nothing to install and no account to create. - Invite people. Send the link, or read the code out on a call. Friends type it on the homepage and they're in.
- Add videos. Search YouTube right from the lobby, or paste a video, playlist or Mix link. Anyone in the lobby can add to the queue.
- Press play. Play, pause, skip and seeking happen for everyone at once, and a notification shows who did what.
What you can add from YouTube
- Single videos, from any youtube.com, youtu.be, YouTube Music or Shorts link.
- Playlists: paste the playlist link and its videos join the queue in order. Paste a video link that's part of a playlist to start from that video.
- Mixes: YouTube's auto-generated radio playlists add their first batch of about 25 songs.
- Search results: start typing a song or artist in the add box to get suggestions and matching videos, then pick one.
How the sync works
Every person's browser plays the video with YouTube's own embedded player. Music2gether's server keeps the lobby's official position (which video, how far in, playing or paused) and a shared clock. About once a second, each browser checks itself against that position and quietly jumps back into line if it has drifted, so listeners stay within roughly a second of each other.
Because playback is local, everyone sets their own volume, and a slow connection only affects the person on it. If someone's video buffers, they catch up on their own instead of pausing the whole room.
Watch parties without the hassle
Most “watch together” tools need a browser extension, a desktop app, or for everyone to sign in to the same service. A Music2gether lobby is just a web page: it works on laptops, phones and TV browsers, and it disappears 15 minutes after everyone leaves.

Is it free to listen to YouTube together on Music2gether?

Does everyone need a YouTube account?
No. Videos play through YouTube's official embedded player, which works without signing in to YouTube.
Do we see the video, or just hear the audio?
Both. The video plays for everyone in the lobby, so it works for music videos, live performances and anything else on YouTube that can be embedded.
Can I add a whole YouTube playlist?

Why was a video skipped?
Some uploaders turn off playback on other websites, and some videos are private or blocked in certain countries. Those can't play in an embedded player, so they're rejected when you add them or skipped when they come up.
Does it work on phones?
Yes, in any modern mobile browser. Phones require a tap before audio can start, so you'll see a Start Listening button when you join.
